Because Campeche is not on the tourist circuit, it boasts plenty of inexpensive hotels, though for the same reason they can be rather shabby.

Avoid rooms overlooking the street, as Campeche's narrow lanes magnify traffic noise.

The best bargains are to be found within a couple of blocks of the zócalo.

The youth hostel, on Av Agustín Melgar (tel 9/816-1802; US$5–10), is clean and bustling, with single-sex dorms, and camping in the grounds, but it's a long way out. To get there, catch a bus ("Directo/Universidad") from the ADO station, or one marked "Lerma" or "Playa Bonita" heading west through the old walled city. Elegant colonial building with comfortable rooms; the best ones overlook the courtyard. US$15–25. Baluartes, Av Ruiz Cortines, just south of the Hotel del Mar (tel 9/816-3911, fax 816-2410, baluarte@campeche.sureste.com).

The Hotel del Mar's older and slightly cheaper rival, with a pool, TVs and a/c. US$60–80. Campeche, C 57 no. 2, opposite the cathedral (tel 9/816-5183). Basic rooms in a colonial house; the rooms overlooking the zócalo are noisy. Colonial, C 14 no. 122 (tel 9/816-2222).

Formerly the Ramada Inn, this comfortable upmarket hotel has pool, restaurant and car rental facilities. US$60–80. Lopez, C 12 no.189 (tel & fax 9/816-3344). Attractive central hotel with clean comfortable rooms, TV and a/c. US$25–40.

Posada del Angel, C 10 no. 307, corner of C 55 (tel 9/816-7718). Modern hotel, centrally located by the corner of the cathedral. All rooms have TV and a/c. US$15–25. 2*
